On Thursday, a Missouri man was sentenced to 8 years in federal prison for brandishing a Nazi flag in the wake of a foiled attack on the White House in 2023.

Sai Varsith Kandula traveled from St. Louis, Missouri, all the way to Washington, D.C., in 2023.

Four hours after Kandula’s arrival, he crashed his U-Haul rental truck into the barriers that protected the White House.

He pulled out a flag that had a swastika from his backpack and laid it on the ground.

Kandula told law enforcement in interviews that he wanted to overthrow the government and replace it with a dictatorship like Nazi Germany.

He also admitted that he would have ordered the assassination of Joe Biden if it had helped him reach his goal.

In their sentencing memorandum for Kandula, prosecutors stated, “While one could look at the attack and claim the unsophisticated method was unlikely to penetrate the Secret Service’s security measures in place, recent events surrounding the attempted assassination attempt of former President Trump serve to remind us that individuals with such destructive intentions are capable of causing serious damage to the American Political System.”

They wrote, “Even young individuals, who at first glance may seem to lack resources to carry out a successful attack on American Democracy, may succeed, despite the multiple layers of security employed by the U.S. government to protect its officials.”
